Avoid Texas Car Insurance Claims by Practicing Safe Driving Skills in Bad Weather

Despite the dry summer and fall, West Texas has recently started to see more “wet” weather. In just one week we have seen both snow and rain, and it looks like they are both in the forecast for this weekend! We want you to avoid injury and Texas car insurance claims by practicing some of these safety tips for driving in winter weather.

You may have heard these before, but a little reminder may help you prevent an accident:

  • First and foremost, SLOW DOWN! Remember, it does take longer to stop in wet weather.
  • Stay toward the middle lanes to avoid puddles on the sides of the road.
  • Your following distance should be significantly increased from the 3-second-rule  in bad weather
  • Drive in the tracks of the car ahead of you
  • Turn your headlights on, even if it is in the middle of the day!

You can also avoid accidents by using safe practices before you begin driving in bad weather:

  • Check your windshield wipers; they should be changed around once a year.
  • Wipe off your shoes on the floor mat; you don’t want them to slip off the pedals while driving!
  • Activate the defroster on your front and rear windows, if possible.
  • Check your tires to see how much tread you have:
    • If your tires are bald, you are putting yourself at risk while driving on water.

The most important thing to remember is if you do not feel safe driving in bad weather, then don’t! Try to get a ride with someone else or stay inside. If you have any questions about your Texas car insurance or if you would like a Texas auto insurance quote, contact one of our agents today!
