According to The Dallas Morning News, temperatures today are expected to reach 109, breaking the 60-year-old daily temperature record of 107. So far there have been 34 straight days of 100 degree weather, and counting. The stats are catching up quickly with the 1980 record of 42 consecutive 100-degree days.
“More record-breaking temperatures are in the forecast for today and going into the weekend,” said Jennifer Dunn, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth. An excessive heat warning was issued Monday and has now been extended through Friday. In addition, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas is asking consumers to conserve electricity. This is because the grid operators saw record demand for the third straight day.
Dallas county health officials are also urging residents to keep a close eye on friends and neighbors after the county’s heat-related deaths reached 13 on Wednesday. The heat is especially dangerous during the night. “An urban heat island is kind of what we are seeing,” Dunn said. “The Dallas-Forth Worth area has been the warmest location the last several mornings.”
It is important to stay safe in all aspects of your life, especially when the weather is out of control. As temperatures rise, there are more risks for health issues, forest fires, and drought.
