This is why the area is coming together to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation, according to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. For the organization, without holding fundraisers, hundreds of epilepsy patients living in the South Plains would lose access to care, said Dr. John DeToledo, Texas Tech Health Sciences Center neurology chair.
Federal budget cuts forced the Epilepsy Foundation of Texas to close their Lubbock office. Patients from all over the state traveled to the office for clinic appointments, and now, many patients have less access to care. “We can’t rely on state funding any longer for these clinics,” said Donna Stahlhut, Epilepsy Foundation of Texas chief executive officer.
The foundation will host a 5K run and a one mile walk for participants under the age of 12 on Saturday in an effort to keep the program going. The race will begin at 8 am at the Texas Tech football facilities. The event is being co-sponsored by the Texas Rangers of Company C. In addition, Texas Rangers handmade spurs, a leather duffle bag, pistol case, and autographed book will be auctioned off.
